I'm going tomorrow evening!
I'm expecting a lot of it !(which is bad...it can only become a big dissapointment... ;) )
Last year I went to Paris and visited Versailles, the castle in which the movie takes place. I was so impressed, it's so beautifull!!!!
I've heard that this movie is partly shot in/around Versailles, so I can't wait!!!

It was wonderfull!! A beautifull movie! :D
The costumes were awesome! Funny thing is that they've used very modern music in the movie.
I think the movie gives a good view on the ridiculous lifestyle that the elite had before the French Revolution.
If it comes out in the US you sure should see it! I don't think it's a very popular movie however, we went on a friday evening and there were only 6 (!) other people!!!!

It's not out in the UK yet either!! I want to see it. I'm reading Antonia Fraser's book right now. I was hoping to finish it before I see the movie.

Oh man, I think in Houston it's coming out on October 13th... I really want to see it. I trust Sophia Copola(sp) and her work...The costumes remind me of the Rose of Versailles play... all floofy and it takes up a whole hall?

I finally saw this tonight [instead of studying for finals o-o ]. I really liked the costumes and the cakes!! I also thought Jason Schwartzman was very funny.. overall, though, the movie didn't seem very lasting to me. The concept was there, but it didn't really move me in any way.
Anyway, I remember there were more thoughts on this, but I guess the recent board problems deleted them? So what did everyone think, if you don't mind sharing again?

I freaking love Marie Antoinette! I agree, I love the costumes and all the great stuff they got to eat. But it really did move me, I think mainly because there wasn't that much dialogue and it really employed the use of facial expression, and scenery to get the message across. I really admire Sofia Coppola for what she did with the story. you should see Lost in Translation if you haven't seen it yet, it's amazing! The book that (I think) the movie is based on is really interesting too. It talks about Marie Antoinette's affair with the Axel Fersen (the soldier in the movie) and the troubles she and the king had in bed. Check it out :D
p/s: I love Jason Schartzmann!!!

I liked it. I think Sofia Coppola is amazing. The visuals were phenomenal: the dresses, the food, the camera work... I found the lighting striking, too.
I found the music choices to be a little dubious, however. :o

It was visually pleasing. I wanted all of her shoes and everything she was eating...amaaazing costumes.
The random use of Siouxsie and the Banshee's "Hong Kong Garden" in the middle confused me.
Also...they completely glossed over a huge part of the story. The end was basically showing a little angry mob with pitchforks and torches...
HELLO!!! IT WAS THE FRENCH REVOLUTION!!!
*le sigh*

Oh man! I haven't seen the movie yet, but I want to so badly!
Well, I watched a different movie today, and the theater had free little movie posters and they had a stack of Marie Antoinette ones. So I grabbed one. :D

Oh, I loved Marie Antoinette SO much! I'd heard for a long time how people were saying it wasn't very good, and that it was boring, but I was completely swepted up in it. . .Last but not least because I've always been a total MA fan. I think the greatest thing about the movie was the way Sofia Coppola allowed modern audiences an experience that they could personally relate to, despite it being from the 1700's! It really portraid the fun, love and disapointments/grief that those people went through, the same as us. :yum:

Well, believe or not I so the movie just now ( I only have pay per view and it came out this weekend ) i Know, sooo late. The photgraphy and art direction was awesome Sofia Coppola is indeed very good, but I absolutely hated the music. Maybe she wanted the "contrast"...but it actually took away from the movie instead. The modern touch was just not appropiate I believe.

I loved it so much! It made me really obsessed with that era for a while. It was being shown on a little screen on the plane I went on to England (along with about 20 other movies you could choose from for free, our airline was awesome) and I watched it twice. I guess I mostly just like the costumes and the luxury portrayed in it. I even agree that the plot was dumb. And the songs they chose. But it is still one of my favorite moovies. My mom watched it and she didn't like it she said something like it was "the mtv music video version of Marie Antoinette's life", which I guess is true. For some reason the part that stuck in my head after I saw the movie was when she was running around with her daughter in the garden, I thought that part was really beautiful.

The movie is pretty much just eye candy to be taken in small doses. I say I can't stand it when I see the movie all the way through --oh, the decadence!
But it does rub off on me, and for five hours after at the very least you can find me prancing around in a dress eating small sweets off of fine china and refering to everyone as my royal subjects. :D

I loved Marie Antoinette.
Did anyone else notice the pink (or blue?) converse while she was trying on shoes?
XD
That was deliberate though.
The hidden modern items, the modern music, all are supposed to remind you that Marie was basically a normal teenager, doing what the average teenage girl would do.
Basically, tying her to modern teenagers, thus making her character much easier to identify with.
And it gives it a unique quality.
I usually can't sit through period films because they have a tendency to bore the crap out of me, and this was a huge exception in all aspects.
As soon as I heard Siouxsie and the Banshees, I was smitten.

i loved the music... i really thought it all fit...
but it really was a good movie... the acting from kirsten (sp?) dunst was forced and i didnt like that she kept her american accent... the movie itself seemed ireverant to the hard times of the pre french revolution era... and it made everything look very very pretty...
she was so yung when she assended to the throne and was given so much responsabilty (like it was her fault that he didnt want her!!! her mother giving her 'tips' and the like...)
it showed, i think, that she was ignorant of the lower classes, and that her actions had consequences... it angered me becaue it was so true... that she just didnt know and almost refued to know....
but this is my opinion... :D
