I for one love depressing music and...I love them!
Mmmhmm. Coughing Colors for instance is definitely not upbeat.
In my case the reason they probably hated it is because the people I recommended it to have very...closed music tastes. One of them only listens to pop-punk and power-pop (Paramore, Fountains of Wayne, Jimmy Eat World, etcetera) and the other only really likes folkyish pop songs.
