I was looking at their site, and noticed that they had all sorts of different heads and bodies and eyes (eek! eyeballs!). obviously they're customizable, but how does it all work? do you buy the parts and put 'em together yourself? or do they do it for you? I really do like this idea of dolls you can design...

That's pretty much it! You can buy them in kits, or all put together. the parts are like beads and strung together with tough tight elastic which holds them together in a way they can pose in all kinds of postions and hold it.
They can come painted, or unpainted so you can do it yourself, and you can change their eyes for different shapes and colors, change thuer wigs etc to make a doll unique to you!
They are a lot bigger than I thought at fist, the full sized ones are 2 feet tall!!!!!

A good website to look at if you're interested is denofangels.com (http://). Some dolls do come in "kits" that you have to put together yourself, but most come assembled.
Half the fun of ABJD (not all of them are dollfies!) is customization! It all comes down to what YOU want - eye colour, wig, face molds, even down to the makeup.

here's a new question: can you swap out the wigs? or do they stay on the noggin forever? and can you use these eyes (http://e-d.co.kr) in a Volks head? and can you use just any paint for face-ups or just the kind they sell from their site/store?

You can change the wigs as often as you want really easy, they are just like mini people wigs, also you can use those eyes with Volks dolls (and pretty much any BJD) and regular acrylic paint and chalk pastels are what most people use to paint their faces.

I firgured this may fit in here, since it's a question about SD.
I've asked my parents for a doll for Xmas of their website, but we're not sure if they ship to England or how fast the shipping is.
So any info would help, since I can't see much on their web!

Use the international site if you want it shipped to england.

i was checking up on dollfies and theres something i dont get-how can ready made ones cost $600 while if you assemble it your self its less than half that(unless my math is really bad) i mean they cant be that hard to assemble right? :?
loli-dolly- Not exactly sure what your talking about,
most dolls come pre-assembled and all.
There are kits out there,
but I thought they sold for the same price.
Even though I'm not sure about it~
They are a lot more complicated to put together than you might think.
I've restrung four dolls now - the last one I did actually broke my finger!
It takes a lot of effort and strength,
expecially if it's a more complex doll.
Maybe they also havn't sanded the seams either,
which some people find annoying to do.
And then it also wouldn't come with a face-up, clothes, wig, eyes, ect.
But you might also have miscalculated something.
Things like this are hard to understand unless you are used to them.
Also these dolls aren't really 'Dollfies'
but many people still call them that -
or use it to advertise them (ebay and such).
Dollfies are actually a 18" doll made by Volks;
made from Vinly.
The face is (usually) painted on, eyes and everything.
Also the jointing is different,
the body doesn't have elastic going through it,
it's more made like a Barbie.
tearsofthewinds- I'm pretty sure they will ship to England~
If not there is always Ebay or marketplaces on sites like DoA.

1680 yen for a body?
:?
What section of the Volks site are you looking at?
You want to be in the Super Dollfie section.

I think you're in the regular Dollfie section. If you're looking for an ABJD, you should be in the Super Dollfie section.
There's no way you'd be able to get a body for 1680 Y unless it was damaged beyond repair, and even then it would cost more than $100 US.

It can all get unnecessary complicated, basically BJD stands for Ball jointed doll (the "A" some people use is for Asian pretty much not unnecessary) Ball jointed dolls are the big doll you see a lot of photos around of stuff like my 2 girls and this kind of thing...

People call them dollfies because that's what Volks called them (it's doll and figure put together)
Volks offer the Super dollfie (the big fancy one most people are talking about) and regular which is a cheaper vinyl doll kind of like a more poseable customizable Barbie (they are pretty neat too!)
Volks have an English site which is easier to follow... http://www.volksusa.com/

new question!
the base bodies they sell on the US site top out at 27 cm (10.6 in) tall. Super Dollfies are 57 cm (22.4 in) tall, SD13 are 60-63 cm (23.6-24.8 in) tall, Mini SD is 43 cm (16.9 in) tall, SD Cute is 43-45 cm (16.9-17.7 in) tall, and Yo-SD/Yo-Tenshi is 26 cm (10.2 in) tall. why can't/don't they make a Super-Dollfie base body? that's what I was expecting. luckily I hadn't even thought of actually ordering one. so how can I make an SD that's totally, uniquely mine?

You change the eyes, wig and paint the face-up.

some people swap out the body on their volks dolls for other doll bodies :) I'm not sure about why they don't have a base SD body or if they do or not because I'm not a huge fan of volks(though they were the original...ish) If you want a completely yours doll you could do what viv did and sculpt your own! :D
