So, a doctor I saw yesterday is putting me on a yeast-free and dairy-free (except eggs) diet for the next ten days. I'm also not supposed to do much sugar...definitely not refined sugar, at least.

I never really did a full detox after coming back from India, and my system is a mess. By cutting out those foods for a short period while supplementing with enzymes and some detox herbs, I'll have things balanced out. When things are unbalanced, I lose all my energy, get moody, and my skin breaks out...so this should be a good thing for me.

Does anyone know of any good, SATISFYING foods that meet these requirements? I'm a strict vegetarian, so no meat or poultry.

I'm huuungry!

Thank you! :)

Fruit salad? matza? Salad? Find a Vegan and ask them 'cause I'm clueless b/c of all the breads and pastas I eat I can't help you. I'm sorry..

Why do you have to detox b/c of India?

New Delhi is extremely polluted (2nd most polluted city in the world), and inhaling/absorbing all those toxins in the air day in and day out for three weeks is going to have an effect on your system. Yuck!

I don't know how vegans do it! I mean, I was vegan for a few months and was totally miserable. Poo...

Lots of rice and rice noodles, nuts, barley soup, risotto, hummus, and tons of veggies. My friend has a condition where she can't eat yeast, and rice noodles are pretty good. Rice bread, however, is horrible.

Mmm, thank you! I'm lucky that I'm not allergic to wheat or dairy, but I didn't realize how much of both I actually eat until I took them out of my diet! I'll probably do much more substituting when I go back to a normal diet. I do miss cheese, though...soy cheese is awful! And the brands that aren't AS bad put a little bit of yeast in the product. Grr!

Check out a lot of Asian and Southern Meditteranean cuisine. A lot of it is made from fresh veggies and whole grains, and is very tasty.

But I feel you on the cheese. Good cheese is one of the greatest things in the world.

I second rice and rice noodles. And hummus.

Also, soy products are good....tofu, edomane (soy beans), and if you can stand it, soy milk isn't half bad in my opinion.

Singapore style rice noodle with snow peas, sprouts, mushrooms, etc., and egg is very filling. Usually, I have it with curry...I'm not sure how you like curry or if you're allowed to have it. No meat and no wheat.

The diet/regimen is actually doing wonders for my complexion!!

My hormones have been really out of whack since getting off the Pill, so I was ordered to use a light, natural Progesterone cream twice a day -- that's helping a lot too. The diet is really detoxifying, though...I've been really lethargic since coming back from India, and my skin was breaking out consistently, in really unusual areas (i.e. cheeks instead of the T-zone).

I've been eating a lot of legumes, and making big salads. I've cheated and eaten a little bit of cheese, but nothing significant. If I cheated on wheat, it's only been whole grains.

I still feel a little deprived and out of energy at times, but I love my new glow...and I'll be able to safely eat whatever I want in three days! Yay.

Well, the trick for me to being vegan is cheese, now.

I solved my "omg I need milk in my espresso to have lattes four times a day" by getting completely hooked on blue diamond unsweetened original almond milk. It's super creamy, white, and doesn't make my coffee or cereal taste like poo. (I've tried soy milk, rice milk, oat milk, and other brands of almond milk... let me tell you, this is the ONLY one that didn't make my coffee taste nasty.) If you can find an alternative milk for your needs, normally that's one of the biggest obstacles.

Cheese. Cheese is my downfall. Soy Mozzarella, however, is a life-saver. Most of the newer fake-cheeses come in varieties that aren't impossible to stomach. Many of the softer cheeses like paneer and feta are fairly easy to get "close enough." I've even had haloumi made from only plants and it was actually as good as the regular kind. I've made wheat-less pizzas with vegan soy mozzarella that were so good my "chicken is a vegetable" brother couldn't tell the difference.

Also, if you need to stay wheat-free for a long period of time, investing in a bread-maker and pasta-maker are good ideas. I purchase rice, potato, and soy flour for making breads and pastas. I have many recipes for vegan diets (I just need to do things like, copy my scribbled handwriting on the back of an envelope that has the killer brownie recipe to a digital method...) so if you're wanting something in particular or just something new, I can probably produce a few cheap & good recipes. :)

Thank you, Cerise! I'm off the diet now, but those are some very helpful suggestions. I'm actually craving dairy (cheese included) waaaay less, which is pretty cool -- I'm sure my guts appreciate it. I don't really crave sugar, either, and whenever I eat/drink something that is sweetened with refined sugar, it tastes like too much. I'm back on wheat completely, but mostly just whole grains. My skin broke out like crazy when I took out the wheat!

I didn't do too much experimenting with soy cheese. I don't really use dairy in drinks and cereal in the first place, so that transition was easy...I'm a fan of almond milk, too.

I'm still eating way less sugar, dairy and white flour products, but I'm not depriving myself...that's not healthy either.
