I've just got back from the contraception clinic, and I can't change pills because I'm overweight and it would put me at risk of a stroke!

Sooo... I've decided to get serious on the losing weight issue at long last.

Here are some of my idea's:-

*excersise obviously- maybe walking the dog a few times a week and once I'm sorted some gym type activity, maybe swimming if there's a suitable class....
*Some kind of routine regarding food- like a general weeks plan so I dont go crazy on stuff
*a little of what i enjoy
*plenty of water!

I know that the excersise bit is the important one for me, i used to dance (ballet, tap, disco) and that kept me trim- so when i went to uni and stopped i gained since (plus you gain at uni anyway!), the pill itself doesnt help, neither does loving food or the current stress I'm under to find a new job...

So yeah, any advice and idea's from you guys, even idea's for yummy healthy food or suppliments that you take that you think have a good effect....

Yeah... and I'll keep this up to date with how im doing weight wise in the hope that it'll kick start me to be a good monkey, maybe though maybe i should keep it to my journal.... does anyone mind? I whinge enough on here already i guess....

I gained a ton of weight when I moved to America. Kung Fu has helped me lose quite a lot, and currently trying to regain some kinda portion control, I have a weird thing where I feel I must finish every meal no matter how big. I'm just trying to recognize when I'm full, and break the bad habits.

I guess thats the hard way, but I've gone from a 32" waist to a 28" so I guess it's working?

I dont think htat finishing a meal even when you are full is such a bad habit- it's more something that seems to be the norm -like your parents saying 'you cant leave the table till you've finished' or that you'll get it for dinner every night till you eat it- I know the feeling- me and hte blokey are trying to shift that.

I need to do excersise i know, but it's as much finding something that fits in.

Join the Navy? Hehe, no...I've always had a weight issue and I lost a ton of weight when I went to bootcamp. But, within a year I gained it back. I'm at a 28" waist to Viv, which is fine, but still not where I want to be, but I've lost a bit the past couple weeks from just regular excercise. I guess my best advice Midgetgem is excercise. If you can get into a routine, even a 1/2 hour 5 days a week will benefit you. Walk in the park, do stretches (+situps, jumping jacks) in the morning. On off days, get some free weights ranging from 2-8 lbs and work with them for 15-30 minutes. As time goes on, you'll find you don't even think about it and you'll do more and more. Also, eat lots of greens, carrots, fruits high in potassium and vit C and lean proteins. You don't have to give up everything at all! I've weighed everything from 100 lbs to 180 lbs and through it all I can stay at a healthy 125-135 by just keeping a pretty simple excercise regimen and clean diet. I still eat crap food on weekends once in a while. Trust me, once you get into it, you'll be amazed. It's also nice to have a friend or someone there to help out.

I've been trying to lose weight cuz yeah I gain some for several reasons. Its not easy but you just have to keep trying. I drink water all the time at work and I used to eat snacks from the vending machine but I dont anymore. I've also been trying to eat less. I also like to finish all the food on my plate, I dont like to waste food. So if im taking leftovers to work I dont serve myself as much. I hardly drink soda now. Also eating late isnt good, so not eating at night helps supposedly. The exercize part is the one that I dont really feel like doing. I'm too lazy to go to the gym and have to drag myself there when I do. I lost a little I think, or my clothes just fit looser. So all in all I suggest eating healthier and with smaller portions, exercising some, not drinking soda much, getting good sleep, and drinking plenty of water, its your friend!

Finish a meal isn't a bad habit at all, but here in the US the portion sizes tend to be a lot bigger than back in the UK.

I have the same problem...I used to dance 10 hours a week, and when you do that, you can eat anything. Now, I'm in high school, junk food is easy to come by, and I've gained so much weight. I'm thinking about joining a gym, because diets don't work out for me. I'm Italian, and I love my food. And I love lots of it!

Good luck!

Though it sounds like the opposite of what to do, you have to make sure that you eat all day. Break your eating up into 6 or 7 controlled portions that give your total daily caloric intake that you want to stick with. Eating large meals infrequently actually makes your body store more fat rather than use it as energy because you train it (your body)to think that you aren't getting food on a regular basis, so it goes into "starvation mode." Also make sure to incorporate full servings of veggies and fruits- they are usually low in calories and very high in all the good stuff you need like fiber and such, and tend to make you feel more full. Water is important, often our bodies send the wrong signal that when you are thirsty, you feel hungry. So making sure you have a good water intake is also important. Try to cut out foods that are just empty calories and fat, like white bread (replace with wheat or whole grain) or beer (either cut it out, replace with a glass of red wine, or drink a "lite" one) or lots of fried items; reduce or eliminate red meat, and focus on fish and chicken- both high in protiens and lower in fats. If you eat rice, make sure that it's a whole grain (brown rice) or something like that, and combine it with some sort of beans or lentils, very high in protiens, which also makes you feel fuller. You'll get more from it rather than eating just white rice with a pat of butter! Try to eliminate as much dairy as possible, but yogurt is fine as long as it's not full of sugar (Stoneyfield farms is the best, in my opinion). Dairy is full of fats and calories, not to mention growth hormones and antibiotics. (All milk and dairy products have all the calcium and vitamins added to them anyway.) I find rice milk is so much better and tastier (Rice Dream is great and they make a vanilla and chocolate), and soy milk is kinda gross. It gave me stomach problems, and I know alot of other people who have the same issue. But it can't hurt to try. Hope that helps!

Thanks Kashi-pan (I hope ive spelt that ok!) the advice you give is soooo good!

I'm working on a diet of sorts- just ensuring that im going to have plenty of veg and water- but something to pad it out too!

I love wholemeal foods more (though i do sometimes go on a white bread binge!)so that should help me. The milk that we get comes straight from the farm and has nothing added (though i drink very little and semi-skimmed) i really dont like soyamilk either- rice milk sounds fun- I'll have to try to find some!

on a more random note what do you guys in america measure yourselves in, here we do stone and pounds, or kg...

thanks- i just like to help when i can! I do pounds- but i do know a few people who weigh themselves in kg's. Rice milk is great- it has the consistency of skim milk, but it tastes so good! It's actually really good in oatmeal. You should try a yoga class-it tones you up and reduces stress, so sometimes that makes it easier on you because you're not freaking out about stuff. best of luck-keep us all updated.

Yeah good advice Kashi. I think thats a problem I have, that I dont balance my meals out. I mainly just eat one meal. I know breakfast is the most important meal but I dont really eat it because I dont like to eat in the morning. I think I put my body through starvation mode but its hard to get used to another way of eating. I dont weigh myself though I think I lost a few by doing what I have been doing which isnt the healthiest way to go about it.

Hah, I tend to do that a lot. My dog just doesn't know the meaning of moderation. He's this ginormous black lab, and he gets so excited when we take a walk that he forgets that we're supposed to be walking. Then, when I finally get pissed off enough to take him home, he realizes that the walk is over and starts to behave.

Well, generally, most Americans are overfed. Restaurants give huge portions and we have a standard at home for it.

What I've started doing now is, I usually only go out to eat at lunch because that's when I'm hungriest, the service is faster, and the portion are smaller.

Other than that, I advice eating four or five small meals a day as opposed to 3 big ones.

And eat healthy foods, like yogurt, fruit, and vegetables.

There's always the quick way out: Bed-ridden with the flu :p

I know it's not a great alternative...Last time I was bed-ridden with a high fever for about a week (5 years ago), I lost about ten pounds in the end, and stayed that way for another several months, which was when I discovered how delicious RCC's cafeteria food was. Then I ballooned up an extra twenty pounds over the course of the entire summer break >_<***

If you don't want to eliminate meat out of your diet, I'd reccomend the George Foreman Grill. My ma got me one last christmas and it worked awesome. You cannot believe how much fat drips out, and it makes the meat tastes better. For extra flavor, hit it with some Worcester (sp?) sauce. Yum yum.

Green tea also helps in losing weight, although there are special types of green tea that does so. It essentially boosts one's metabolism. There was one box of this stuff I picked up from Chinatown that my aunt reccomended me, but I can't read the Chinese characters on it. Phooey...

Yummy, Stoneyfield Farms makes some of the best damn yogurt available^^! And yeah, soy milk's kinda nasty. I had to drink that stuff for a while when I used to live at my ma's b/c she was on one her soy diets. It also gave me indigestion. I guess it all depends on one's tolerance level.

I need to lose several pounds as well. Just like everyone else, I used to be skinnier. the problem is that whenever I had a boyfriend, even when I was younger, I used to gain a few pounds (like 10 or so), but then I'd lose it when we broke up. Then I found one that I married, so it kinda just keeps piling on. I think this happens to girls bc generally we are smaller than our men, but then when we are around them we start to adapt their eating habits. It's not good when one can say, "i can eat as much as a man who is more than half of a foot taller tham me!" I've been trying to cut out diner food, and I try not to drink soda, but my husband LIVES on Coke, so I always end up sipping at his cup. :(

I bought Carmen Electra's strip tease workout shenanigan, but I'm too embarrassed to open the package. :o

I'd actually love to join a gym, I think that treadmill's are fun, and I can pretend I'm someone's gerbil. Around here though, the gym is so expensive. I just started a new job so maybe after I get my pay cheque and feel more comfy in the money situation I'll join one. It's incredibly difficult to start a weight loss regimen if one's SO is not supportive.

My hubby had the same soda addiction, his was Pepsi though! When he stopped drinking it, as in doesn't have more than one can/cup per week, he lost almost 10 lbs. All it really is is sugar water with some carbonation, it's so bad for you! It took a little convincing at first, but when he realized how much he was loosing, he had no problem giving it up.

the only issue i have with diet soda is that it's made up of water and sythetic chemicals. it's great if you are diabetic, but i honestly think that the chemicals are worse for you than real sugar, like margarine. here's a fun fact- diet soda actually goes rancid, so make sure that you drink it before the date on the bottle or you will get sick.

I don't really much care for diet soda. To me, it tastes odd, plus it goes flat too quickly (considering its low sodium content). The only diet soda I can stand drinking is Diet Dr. Pepper, because it tastes almost identical to the regular stuff.

Yay for loosing pounds already!

I find the biggest thing that most people overlook when trying to shed a few pounds is beverages. Unless you drink water and any sort of tea or coffee minus the sugar and milk/cream you are taking in lots of calories.

I just recently quit drinking coffee. I was drinking up to 8 cups a day with cream and sugar...and even though I am hard pressed to eat 1200 calories a day (I eat a lot - but most of the food I eat is low calorie or fresh fruits and vegies) I was putting on weight from the cream and sugar in my coffee. I cut that out and now I just drink plain green tea and already I've lots tons of weight.

I have also eliminated dairy from my diet - I have everything soy these days...which helped a lot. As someone mentioned previously - dairy has a lot of growth hormones in it. Also - if you eat any sort of meat - especially beef or chicken and eggs...there is a lot of growth hormones and antibiotics in those as well which can cause excess weight gain. You are better off going organic or eliminating them completely.

Spreading your meal into more smaller meals is an excellent idea also. I normally eat breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner and supper with my morning and afternoon tea and supper being low fat and low/no sugar items.

Oh! And one more thing - don't go the no-fat road either! You are much better off eating low fat youghurt than you are eating no fat. The little bit of fat helps keeps you full longer, and causes less cravings and can actually aid in weight loss also.

I think what id like to do is buy a bike, and ride to my boyfriends or somewhere once a week. Plus i could potentially ride to huddersfield (my nearest town) catch a train, then ride to work from Garforth at the other end... I'm not entirely sure about this idea, but i think i need to try something!

I also keep making chris take me roller blading, though i wish i lived in america by the sea so i could blade on the long promenades.... i bet id learn faster then!

also though ive been on expenses in maidenhead, I've been trying to eat healthier, like having sushi and melon for lunch.

I guess I'll have to pull in extra time at the gym, though it's kinda lame how the gym at my apartment complex closes hella early (10pm weekdays, 8pm on weekends), so I have to work out in front of rippling muscle-men

It is nice going rollerblading/bicycling on the boardwalk, but the problem is with many beach cities is that - it gets too crowded most of the time. Best time to do these activities is during dawn. Like, Tony and I took our kenjutsu practice to the Wharf around 8 in the morning, and the entire place seemed fucking enormous since it was empty with the exception of a few joggers. Plus, the annoying tourists don't drop in until around 10am :D

Ooh, have you tried unagi donburi? That stuff is awesome, and it's also healthy too!

1lb a week would be healthy progress. Plus doing it slowly that way is the way to get the weight off and keep it of. Dropping tons quickly is a sure fire way something isn't right and to kill your metabolism.

Mmmm Oolong.
www.teavana.com has really good teas, including Oolong in different flavors.
I got Gyokuro Imperial Green Tea and it tastes really good. They sell matcha and a lot of other teas, most, if not all of it is looseleaf. They sell rather nice teapots too.

They told me that when I joined the navy and I lost 9 lbs in one week eating celery most of the time....don't do that though, it's terribly unhealthy. Caffiene also has a nasty effect on metabolism so probably cutting back on that would help (i hate that part)

Drinking vitamin-enriched smoothies are a good way to lose weight. Replace one of your meals with one. Cereal is also always good, since they're low in fat and give you the energy you need.

I've been trying to cut coffee and other caffiene drinks out of my diet, but it's difficult, since I constantly pull late/all-nighters on school projects. So usually when I'm at Starbucks, I order for low-fat milk in my lattes instead of whole milk, and omit the whipped cream.

Also been drinking a lot of water lately, so now I'm gradually losing weight, but I'm mostly targeting my fat ass. It's hard to believe that I used to be willowy when I first moved to the city, but all the nearby fast-food restaurants have tempted me... :D Also, having my boyfriend live with me has also affected my diet, since he cooks way too much food :p

Oh my GOD, I need to lose weight. I started drinking water a while ago but after drinking about 4856487345 gallons a day I kinda got sick of it. I should start again. Some tea has caffeine but it's usually not in really high doses. The smoothies sound good but making them yourself gets so messy and buying them costs an arm and a leg. What to do... tell me about it, i used to dance for many hours a week, but never realised quite how much excersise i was getting till i stopped- went to uni and put on 3 stone! (12*3 lb), im losing now at a rate of ~1lb a week which is ok, and my arms are toning up a treat but it takes time and patience, and self esteem too :(

I drink muchos water and try going excersise much as i can. I know it will take time, but also that it has to be a lifestyle change as much as anything else.
Think im laying good foundations though.
