Well, since the Really, Really Bad Movies Thread is popular, I think we should be more on the positive side and look at Hollywood's best!
*btw Thanks for the idea rockpeacock and Miss. Upsetter, I probabaly beat you to making this thread *

So to get this thread rolling, here are my movies that I absolutly love...

The Phantom Of The Opera- Although this has been inspired by a musical and a book, this movie still brings it. (I think) Gerald Butler is amazing at acting and that-person-who-plays-christine (Never got her name) is perefect at Chrstine! (Someone is free to tell me who she is)

Cars- I know, this is a Disney Movie, but Pixar made cars look cute! And the characters are adorable too! Who wouldn't love car flies and car puns? Also, this teaches us a good lesson... that I can't remember.

Memoirs Of A Geisha- Being a Japanese Geisha fan really makes me like this movie. I haven't read the book, so I may get different opinions on this one. Part of why I like it is because of the music and the costumes, and also I like how you can actually UNDERSTAND them for once.

Well, that's All I can think of. Please post your positive movies on here! I would love to compliment and argue with your taste :p

hmm i have a few faves myself I'll only post a few to get started with :)

Ichi The Killer- For being twice as gory as both kill bill volumes combined This movies has one hell of a storyline. It may not seem like it at first, but once you watch it a few times the whole thing just kind of comes around. The characters are very weird as well.

Kagen no Tsuki (Last Quarter)- I could only secure a copy of this movie when it made it's American release, but it was well worth the wait. It's a sad story of Lost Love. The main characters,Mochizuki Mizuki, mother commit suicide when she was five, and she been living with her father, and his mistress, and their illegitimate child. She has recently broken up with her boyfriend for sleeping with her best friend. Things just don't seem to be going her way untill she wonders into, what looks like an abandon, house and finds Adam. I find this movie so sadly romantic it has to be one of my favorites.

Dolls- I remember hearing the story of the Bound Beggars a long time ago, and when i bought this movie it was actually to get a good deal and free shipping on another package. I finally decided to plug it in, and when i did i fell in love. This movie is about 3 different tragic love stories. It will play a little of one story then moves to another. One Story is of the Bound Beggars, The other is of an old yakuza boss who returns to the park where he last saw his love, and the last is of the stories is of a disfigured pop singer who confronts the pronominal devotion of her biggest fan. the movie is based around the emotions expressed in Bunraku doll theater.

^_^ yay.

Mel Brooks' Blazing Saddles - Funniest movie. Ever. Don't even argue. :D

The Lion King - Just so classic...and this film really is the epitome of animation quality, 2d or 3d. It's absolutely gorgeous.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - trippy, but really engaging. I stil havn't seen his newer movie (the science of sleep) and I really want to...

Old Boy - A Korean film about a man who's falsely (?) imprisioned for 30 years. Violent, twisted, and guaranteed to suprise you.

Curse of the Golden Flower - Also twisted and violent, but also a really well-crafted family drama. I think it's still out in theaters in the states?

Some Like it Hot - Classic oldie, with Marilyn Monroe, Tony Curtis, and Jack Lemmon. A very funny, very likeable movie, and containing so much homosexual humor that the movie almost got the Mccarthy'd! (circa 1959)

And so many more I can't list. XD

millenium actress. everytime i watch this movie i get closer and closer to tears. it's almost like an animated version of memoirs of a geisha(which i also like)

the little mermaid and beauty and the beast. i just love those two movies, i dont know why!

the king and the clown. it's a korean movie and it is so sad! i nearly cried!

hero and house of flying daggers. oohhh i just love those movies!

appleseed(the anime movie) i just loved it. the perfect blend of story and cool action scenes!

i liked phantom of the opera...but seeing it on film played by actors can never really measure up to seeing it on broadway :)

This movie is one of the greatest works of comedy. Honestly! It's so stupid but it's a laugh-yourself-silly movies!
And also, I haven't seen the boradway edition so it might make me look stupid saying the movie is one of my favorites. I should see the broadway one though! The closest I can get is the Original Cast Recording which seems a bit old-fashioned and cocky to me.

To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! -- Wesley Snipes and Patrick Swayze in drag? You bet!

Hedwig and the Angry Inch -- The heartrendingly beautiful saga of transsexual glam rock artist Hedwig and her band. Bonus: it's a musical!

Harold and Maude -- Awww, Bud Cort before he got old and saggy! This classic covers many of society's taboos encompassing love, death and priorities. It remains the only movie that has made me cry at the end...except for a few select Lifetime movies, of course. It is absolutely hilarious, too.

Showgirls -- Worst movie ever...I love it! Bitchy Vegas showgirls claw their way to the top. Bonus: soundtrack includes two songs from Siouxsie and the Banshees.

All George Romero films -- ZOMBIES. That is all.

Stacy -- An absolutely hilarious Japanese B-movie depicting a world where all teenage girls eventually morph into zombies, called Stacys. Includes a brilliant "Evil Dead" reference...chainsaws used to repeat-kill the Stacys are called "Blues Campbell's Right Hand 2" (Engrish??). Highly recommended.

Amelie -- Colorful, inspiring, and adorable!

But I'm a Cheerleader -- A closeted lesbian cheerleader from a square, suburban family is sent to a rehab program to become straight. Hilarity ensues.

Little Miss Sunshine -- Brilliant.

Beauty and the Beast -- What?? A Disney movie where a woman's goodness isn't measured by how meek and fair she is?

American History X -- A much less creepy version of Romper Stomper.

All Muppet movies -- Miss Piggy=FABULOUS.

Richard Simmon's Sweatin' To the Oldies -- Hell yeah!

I heard about that movie! I heard it WAS good too! However my friend think's Gerald Butler's Hot...ew, sorry I'm just NOT into the 12-pack-beard combo.
But he was the Phantom on the Pantom Of The Opera! How he has changed...
Anyway, I'm sure to see 300 soon, or at least my brother will, I can't handle a lot of violence or disturbing images.

Dum de de dum...dum dum dum dum....

Oh yes, to the point.
Another good movie, I'm not sure if I have said before, is Kamikaze Girls.
Sure, their's some parts of the movie that are bit boring, like those stupid flashbacks to Momoko's mom and that doctor, but it was pretty good. I especially loved the part with Ichigo's crush with the huge hair! Hilarious! I about fell off the chair at that point.

And then their's the FMA movie: Fullmetal Alchemist The Movie: The Conqueror of Shamballa! Actually, I've only read the concept of the movie and really haven't watched it but I already love it! And you also get to see Alphonse as a human again! Yessssss~

The piano has to be my favorite movie, for the cinemetograpy itself, it's so beautiful (I want screenshots! give me screenshots!) I didn't see all of pan's labrinth, but I love Ofelia, she's so innocent ("but it was just two grapes! I thought no one would notice!")but also has a strong spirit. And umm...Aren't we forgetting RATATOILLE!!! great animation, paced like an adult movie(no stoping to get the joke), a good plot, and not relying on fart jokes to capture kids' attention! YES, children's movies have come back from the brink! At least that's what I thought untill I saw the commercials for STUPID UNDERDOG!!!! why must you ruin everything that is good and pure, movie companies, why?? :( Wait, isn't it made by the same company that ruined Bridge to Terabithia for everyone? :? Grrr....

I have not seen Ratatoill because it didn't look interesting. And it's by disney too so I really despise it in the first place.
And The Piano sounds a bit familiar. Does it have Adrain Brody in it because I heard he was in a movie with a piano...well, not King Kong of course. No pianos there.

Anything by pixar is pretty clever, and I know adults who have seen it all by themselves, and loved it. I hate disney by itself, it's concepts are really going down the toilet (cinderella III? come on!)

And I believe The Pianist is the one with Adrian Brody in it.

Kamikaze_Jen

Yeah, I would have to agree. Pixar is clever, but Disney is running out of ideas. They might be bankrupt soon if they keep bragging about their "success" High School Musical because that's the only success they've had. I mean, it's ridiculous about how much HSM merchandise I see and how all the little tweens love it as I go and look at Pokemon stuffed animals and Legend of Zelda trading cards. X3

I hope we're not relating Pixar with just any old animation company? Because they've had: Toy story, A Bug's life, Toy story 2, Monster's inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Cars, and Ratatouille. The concepts for each film, besides sequels, have practically nothing to do with each other and are fairly original from what was on the market before for kids movies. Other animation companies seem to take the ideas that worked well before, movies such as Ants and Shark tale, and that show about a crime finding family called the X's. Pixar's animation is vibrant and lifelike for digitally animated movies and also the shorts that they create are cute as well. With all due respect, I believe they are a cut above the rest of the animation companies out there.

My movies:

Chronicle of the Raven - Really indie, but creepy enough.

Spirited Away (Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi) - I could watch this movie fifteen times in a row and still cry like a baby EVERY SINGLE TIME. God I love it.

And of course the quintissential Lolita favourite, Shimotsuma Monogatari.

And I swear they haven't made 4 movies with bugs, and it must of bee different animation company (Like Dreamworks) with the same 3D stuff that release all the overated crummy movies. My all time favorite movies are:

Yukinojo henge (An Actors Revenge): One of my all time favorite movies, its style and story telling are gorgeous. Closest thing to Japanese theater without actually going to one. Its so absolutely unique, you just have to see it yourself (if you can find it because it have never made it to dvd stateside, and the vhs copy is really hard to find)

When a Woman Ascends the Stairs: Another classic, its a drama about a hostess in Japan. Wonderful acting and directing, I seriously cannot recommend it enough.

Tokyo Godfathers: My favorite work of Satoshi Kon (so far). The film is about a group of three homeless people in Japan who happen upon a child on Christmas. Its an interesting look at a growing problem in Japan (as well as the rest of the world) those who are homeless.

Any of Satoshi Kon's Films! Seriously!

I'm surprised by how many people liked Memoirs of a Geisha, everyone I know hated it. I liked the book very much but the movie bored me. Admittedly I watched it on a 7inch back-of-the-seat plane screen during a 10 hour plane trip, that might have had something to do with it.

My favourite movies are:

Ghost World: As far as plot and speed go it doesn't have much but the main character is one of my favourites.

American Beauty: I'm a sucker for movies about alienation set in suburbia.

The Last Unicorn: It scared the crap out of me when I was little :\

Nightwatch + Daywatch: Russian vampire movies that don't take themselves too seriously. Lots and lots of fun and if you ever see them in the cinemas the subtitles are sweet.

Dr Strangelove: Classic, plain and simple. over 40 years later it's still relevant and hilarious.

Priscilla Queen of the Desert: Hugo Weaving and Guy Pearce in drag :D

I watch that movie before I go to play laser tag with my friends. IT GETS ME PUMPED.

/FLEX

All these movies mentioned are so great.. Pride & Prejiduce (I can't spell that word), Pan's Labryinth, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Lil Miss Sunshine, BUT I'M A CHEERLEADER! (whoever said that I love you), Kamikaze girls (of course), Memoirs of a Geisha (of course), Sweeny Todd, Rocky Horror... I'm a big sucker for musicals and anything with cute clothes, so..

HAIRSPRAY! For sure. The clothes are FABULOUS, and of course I adore the music and anything about human rights. *waves a rainbow banner*

Breakfast at Tiffanys. No loli can go without this one, I believe. Audrey Hepburn. Late night parties. Pretending to be rich. JEWELRY! Need I say more?

Roman Holiday. Another must-see... I like Audrey Hepburn. She's a runaway princess who's gotten herself lost in Italy. She's found by a reporter, who eventually figures out who she is..

The Love Com Live action.. though that's not out in anywhere besides Japan, so. xD; It's great for fans of shoujo!

Miss Potter - A good, older-set movie.. sad but good! About Peter Rabbit's creator. I bought it for my mom for Christmas this year.

Nightmare Before Christmas - OF COURSE! I shouldn't have to explain that one.

If I think of more, I'll post more..

I like James Bond movies as well, and the harry potter movies, and LOTR movies..

^Breakfast at Tiffany's is great.
I personally think the scene where the hat gets caught on fire is one of the greatest in comedic history!

I know! I also really like the scene where they steal the masks and wear them... I think it's super cute. I would like to walk around town in a suit and mask one day.

Cloverfield- Good, decent, but I hate end of the world movies. They scare me, they make me cry and want my mother. I came out of the theater in tears and in shock.
Oh yeah, its not a turtle. Its a blob on PMS. (Okay, not a blob...But I don't want to spoil it! So his name is Turtle) Turtle, and his spider friends destroy New York city, while Rob has to safe his EX, Beth (who I would have let DIE! I'm sorry, I don't walk into a TILTED apartment for anyone!)

I am scared spiders, explosions, eye pain, and New York city now. Thanks J.J Abrams.

Ahhh I really liked Cloverfield! I liked how it focused on the mostly insignificant people, rather than the monster and the military and blah blah blah. On the other hand, I saw Juno which I heard from everywhere was really good, and I didn't like it that much :/

As a Pro-choice person, I don't want hollywood doing the oppisite >__>. Hope this ain't some trend. I hated Juno. It was stupid.

I heard about that movie. the new princess is going to be the first black Diney Princess.
"Enchanted" sounds good and funny, and I love that little clip of the fairy-tale prince getting creamed by a bunch of cyclers.
Oh, Enchanted was great. Very cute soundtrack, and I for one loved the leading girl's costumes. There's this huuuuuge hoop skirt she wears at the beginning that makes me giggle.

Newsies-This movie may have been Disney biggest flop but i love it! It had great music, and a great story. It's about the Newsies strike of 1899. :yum: and it has Christin Bale.

Saved- One of the best movies ever made ever! It looks into religion, and some of it's downsides. And how god can still love you even if your gay or something like that. The story follows Mary, who finds out her boyfriend if gay. she has sex with him to de-gay him. which doesn't work, and mary ends up pregnant. it REALLY GOOD

PrincessBride-lol is all i have to say.

A little Princess- one of the few movies that made me cry.

I think it is becoming a trend.

There's a new show on abc Family called
The Secret Life of an American Teenager.
People say it's "a cross between 7th Heaven and Juno".

I personally liked Juno, but this show looks
annoying and trying to hard.

if you don't mind me asking, how is your pro-choice stand in conflict with what happens in Juno? I am pro-choice myself and thought it was wonderfully done and handled the topic well.

Well I'm also Pro-choice, and am pretty sure the writers are too, but there's no way that hollywood would ever make it abortion and have it look good. The protest would be crazy, crazy crazy.

I loved Juno, although I do think they kinda glammed up teen pregnancy. I mean it's not like she was having the worst time ever in the movie when in real life she'd probably be miserable the entire time. but it really is a sweet movie.

I dunno, I think the whole thing where she considers abortion and goes to the clinic with the protesters was not needed. It made her seem evil for even considering it.
I'dd like it alot more if she never went to the clinic and someone else talked her out of it.

I also too think they glammed on it. Her attitude is so...casual and naive. It bugged me.

I also don't believe when the writer says it isn't a remake. A Korean movie, of a similar name (Jenni,Juno) and similar subject matter WASN'T even an inspiration for Juno? Give me a break.

Rocky Horror Picture Show- the songs get stuck in my head and it's hilarious.

the entire Saw series except #2- My favorite movie ever. I know it's gorey and gross but Jigsaw is freakin' genuis. the second one was really stupid though.

Edward Scissorhands- Adorable movie. Edward is so cute and akward.

Sweeney Todd- Dispite the blood being fushia, I loved this movie. The clothes were very drool worthy.

I can't think of anymore.

I couldn't agree with you more! AMAZING movie. I adore it. My mother showed it to the family when I was fifteen, and I've been in love with it since.

Also on my list of epics are:

1. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy
2. Batman Begins/The Dark Knight
3. The Star Wars saga

These are my top three "series" of movies--I could watch them all over, and over, and over. Which I do. I like a lot of other movies, but these ones are seriously epic.

For comedies, my all-time favorites are:

1. Rocky Horror Picture Show
2. Robin Hood: Men in Tights
3. The Producers

Mel Brooks is a comedy god, in my opinion. And RHPS is amazing. I am desperately waiting for a chance to attend one of the midnight showings with the crazy dancing and awesome.
